Best Practices for Quality PWA Measurements

Patient Preparation

For best measurement quality, ensure the patient has:

  • Abstained from alcohol for at least 6 hours prior to the measurement.
  • Abstained from tobacco and caffeine for at least 4 hours prior to the measurement.
  • Fasted for at least 6 hours prior to the measurement; if this is not possible, a light meal is acceptable.
  • Rested in a seated or supine position for at least 5 minutes before the measurement.
  • Their back and arm supported throughout the measurement.
  • Remained as relaxed as possible and refrained from moving or talking during the measurement.
  • Whenever possible, schedule follow-up measurements at the same time of day to account for diurnal blood pressure variation.

Note: Blood pressure can be affected by measurement site, patient position, exercise, and physiological condition.

Proper Cuff Placement

  1. Select a cuff that is an appropriate size for the patient. Each cuff has a size range printed on the inside. When the cuff is wrapped around the arm, the index mark must fall within the marked range. If it falls outside the range, select a different size.
  2. Place the cuff on the bare upper arm, centered over the brachial artery. Palpate the brachial artery if necessary to locate it accurately. Remove any tight or bulky clothing to prevent constriction.
  3. Hold the cuff open with the tube pointing downward and slide it onto the upper arm.
  4. Position the cuff with the artery marker aligned over the brachial artery and with the patient's small finger. The cuff should sit as high on the arm as possible.
  5. Fasten the cuff snugly but not too tightly. Two fingers should fit comfortably between the patient's arm and the cuff.
  6. Position the arm so that the middle of the cuff is level with the heart.

Note: Avoid compressing or restricting the connection tubing.
